DESCRIPTION:<p><span style='font-size: 10pt\;'>When Danielle DeZao entered
one of her first dating relationships at college\, she felt all the initia
l excitement of attraction. However\, soon that thrill degenerated into ve
rbal fights\, control over her activities\, and finally physical abuse. In
a quick turn of events\, which DeZao's own mother calls 'chilling\,' Dani
elle had become a victim of dating abuse. Today\, as a survivor and activi
st\, she is committed to sharing her story of how she came to the realizat
ion that she was in an abusive relationship and how with the help of famil
y and friends she reclaimed her life -- from the ABC News program 'What Wo
uld You Do?' all the way to the White House.</span></p>\n<p><span style='f
ont-size: 10pt\;'>DeZao and her mother Denise\, who have become spokespers
ons for campaigns against teen dating abuse\, will be featured speakers at
a special program\, 'Love Shouldn't Hurt: Talking with your kids about he
althy relationships' on May 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Scarsdale Woman's Club.
The program is designed to help parents help their children who might be
victims of dating abuse. One in four teens will be victims\, and the incid
ence of abuse increases in college. DeZao\, a 2012 Marist College graduate
who grew up in Westchester and Bergen counties\, and her mother will shar
e their experiences\, warning signs\, what to do\, and how parents and fri
 ends can intervene.</span></p>\n<p><span style='font-size: 10pt\;'>A panel
will join the DeZaos to discuss the many facets of abusive relationships\
, to identify available resources and to respond to questions. The panel d
iscussion will be led by Lauren Pomerantz\, LCSW\, Scarsdale High School Y
outh Outreach worker\, who will be joined by panelists Sharon Charles\, LC
SW\, youth counselor with Westchester Jewish Community Services and the Jo
e Torre Safe at Home Foundation\; Det. Sherri Albano\, Scarsdale Police De
 partment's youth officer\; Amy Paulin\, NYS Assemblywoman\; and Chris D'Si
lva\, the leader of the High School's Students Terminating Abusive Relatio
 nships (STAR) chapter.</span></p>\n<p><span style='font-size: 10pt\;'>Laur
en Pomerantz\, who is a principal contact for Scarsdale's teens who might
be in unhealthy relationships\, believes that date abuse cannot be address
ed by parents or schools alone\, but rather requires a community response.
She is encouraged by the many community organizations and leaders who hav
e agreed to be sponsors of the event. 'This community support demonstrates
the understanding in our community leaders that relationship abuse affect
s all parts of our society\, regardless of economic status\, national back
 ground\, race or ethnicity.'</span></p>\n<p><span style='font-size: 10pt\;
'>The Rev. Dr. John Miller of Hitchcock Presbyterian Church noted\, 'We ne
ed to create a community of respect for our children so that they understa
nd what healthy relationships look like and feel like. At the same time pa
rents need to be educated about the danger signs of unhealthy and dangerou
s relationships and given tools on how to discuss these sensitive issues w
ith their children.' Rabbi Jonathan Blake of the Westchester Reform Temple
reflected that sentiment\, urging parents to attend. 'We know that many o
f our teens are hurting\, either as victims of unhealthy relationships\, o
r as friends of victims who feel powerless to provide support. Parents are
  a critical resource for their children\, offering protection\, education\
, and caring. However\, when children leave home for college or adult life
they often encounter unfamiliar circumstances including dating abuse. Oft
en\, even the most caring parents and friends feel powerless to address th
ese destructive relationships. I am pleased to join my colleagues in the f
aith community and other community organizations and leaders in bringing t
his important message to our community.'</span></p>\n<p><span style='font-

 n.jpg' width='235' height='304' />Is the International Finance Coporation
(IFC)\, the World Bank's investment arm\, an experiment run amok? Do billi
onaires and massive multinational corporations really need help from the W
orld Bank and do their projects support or detract from the World Bank's p
urpose? Cheryl Strauss Einhorn\, financial journalist and adjunct professo
r at Columbia Business School\, addresses these questions as she speaks ab
out her investigation into the IFC's chosen investments.</span></p>\n<p><s
pan style='font-size: 10pt\;'><br />Although the IFC's mission is to creat
e opportunity for people to escape poverty and improve their lives\, the I
FC appears to be more in the business of giving loans to billionaires and
massive multinational corporations to finance projects that do not help th
e needy. As Einhorn explains\, the IFC has been financing luxury hotels an
d high end shopping malls in poverty-stricken areas such as Ghana\, and su
pporting gold and copper mines and oil pipelines to benefit primarily the
corrupt authoritarian regimes that control them in Cameroon and Chad.</spa
 n></p>\n<p><span style='font-size: 10pt\;'><br />Hear Einhorn discuss her
findings\, which echo the criticisms made by a broad array of academics\,
watchdog groups\, and grass roots organizations in the poorest countries\,
that the IFC has been subsidizing projects that have little impact on pov
erty and could just as easily have been undertaken without IFC funding. Fi
nd out what else has happened since her article on this topic was publishe
