It seems there are others who feel as I do, that the closure of The Cheesery is a great loss. I would like to organize a fundraiser to bring back this shop. Rather than simply asking for donations, I propose an event such as a fair, a "Save The Cheesery" walkathon, silent auction, or some other fundraising event, with all the proceeds going towards a Grand Re-Opening of The Cheesery. If you know how to get in touch with Pat, Patty and/or Pete or would like to help with this event, please contact me at Savethecheesery@gmail.com.

Many Thanks,
Linda - Linda

Long live The Cheesery. It is the best and we are wishing for a speedy return. We always bought Nova, sturgeon and whitefish salad and the scallion and caviar cream cheese to take with us on trips and give as gifts to friends we were visiting. We need The Cheesery back ASAP. - Alan Appel

I was really sad to see the Hartsdale Cheesery close. I often ran in to get my self-help coffee before catching the train. Pete was always friendly, and if I was short or had to run to get the train, he always let me pay the next time I was in. And as all of us commuters knew, payment was on the honor system -- you paid into the small basket near the coffee dispensing station.

In this day and age, where else are you going to find an "honor system" with a vendor? This is a real loss for all of us. My thoughts and prayers for better times ahead are with Pete and his family. - Michael Kutzin

I literally had tears in my eyes when I saw the sign this morning that said "Permanently Closed." I was shocked and feel a great loss with the closing of "The Cheese Shop," as my son and I called it. Pat, Patty & Pete were the best there is. My son is now 14. When he was a baby, I would take him in his stroller to get my sandwich, and sometimes dinner. Pat always gave him a pickle. Now in high school, my son still always got that personal service. It's not just the food and relationship with the owners and staff -- it's all the memories I have of this wonderful shop. My best to Pat, Patty & Pete, and their children, and the staff. We will miss you terribly. I feel as if I've lost a family member - Linda

Unfortunately, all the truly "local" stores that support all of the PTA, community, and school programs with silent auction items and other financial support do not always get "reciprocation" from the residents of Scarsdale. While it is up to the merchants to stay "fresh" and to be friendly to customers (not always the case in the Village), we also have to make it our business to "buy local." - Ruth Raisfeld

I went to The Cheesery every morning for the best coffee in town. It was a highlight of my day. I looked forward to my hazelnut coffee. They had great cheeses and bagels. It is a shame that they are gone. The managemnet company should have tried to work with them. I understand the rents on this avenue are ridiculous. This is no longer 2007. Get realistic. Small businesses are struggling. How long has Big Top been empty?. This is no different. - wendy

I have been buying at the Cheesery ever since I moved into Hartsdale in 1973 and then to Scarsdale in 1982. They always had great cheese and other items and the service was superb. I am sorry to see them go. - 35+ year patron

I am sorry to see the Cheesery closed. They had the best tunafish that I have ever tasted. Also their bagels were great. (Not surprising since they came from Highridge Bagels). I tried to go there for lunch whenever I was working in town because all of the other food places aside from Harry's are horrible. All my best to Pete and his wife and Pat Hall and her family. I for one will miss them. - Hartsdale Resident

This place had the best lox in NY, bar none. Better than anything in the city and much better than what is across the street at the bagel shop. Also had homemade cream cheese with a variety of flavors that you can't get anywhere else. It's a shame it's gone. Folks, support your local Mom and Pop institutions or they will be gone. We lost Big Top, which the kids loved, now the Cheesery. Next it will be Hartsdale Pharmacy, which also offers excellent local service, if you go to the chains instead. Would you rather have another bank branch than the Cheesery? - Resident

The cheesery is a lot of things, mostly a cheesery. What, mom? Dinner? Okay. Sorry, I have to go. - Steve Pass

Good salmon, good cheese, good bialys, and the lady was nice, but not much else to recommend it. I went there, but I always felt the store was probably a sad shadow of its former self.

I'm sorry it's gone, but I'm not surprised. - Bagel E. Terr

I have lived in Scarsdale for more years than I care to count. I have had a number of occasions at my home for which the Cheesery provided the food. However, in recent years, I never found a compelling reason to buy from the Cheesery, and I'm guessing that others felt the same. Sometimes it's not just the economy. - Deborah
