Edgemont was just as bad, the police and town departments are frightful here as well...seems like complete incompetence is beginning to run rampant - time for citizens to clean house in our local governments, think officials are all getting too comfy and lazy in their sworn duties. Lets all remember, the taxpayers pay their salaries... - anonymous

I think the village should have tree companies on retainer for situations like this. Peoples landscapers worked faster and more efficiently clearing debris from private properties than the village did. ALL trees that overhang power lines need to be removed. The PTA does a great job fundraising for the schools so maybe they should consider using funds to buy generators for the schools. Perhaps the MS should consider solar panels for the roof since it is completely flat. - Cathy

The term "elected officials" doesn't apply in Scarsdale. Those unfamiliar with the self-perpetuating, change-resisting system for appointing public officials with tenuous ties to their constituents could begin by reading the League of Women Voters' summary: http://www.lwvs.org/villageschoolelections.htm. Apparently the system has its merits, but it doesn't allow individuals to make their case and run for office and it doesn't allow citicizens to hear alternatives and make a choice. - fan of direct democracy

I am as disappointed as many of you. The whole power issue, or lack thereof, is a calamity. Ok, so the town officials are basically inept. I think we should have any new town officials be trained in crisis management. For an allegedly highly educated group of officials, what's another few courses of preventative measures? Forewarned is forearmed. - WTF

We contemplate the irony of the gas crisis as we look at our vehicles with full gas tanks sitting idle in our driveways, live electrical wires, three massive trees, and two snapped poles remain a hazard outside our front doors. Trash collection has resumed in the village, but not for us. The police tell us to get hotel rooms if we feel unsafe, insensitive to the fact that we have no cars and there are no rooms and some of us have animals. God bless the us postal service whose mailmen climb through the yellow tape and navigate through the wires to deliver us our mail. I'd like to nominate him for mayor. At least they care. - Greenacres Brewster Residents

Our power came back on at 1:00 a.m.! We were part of the outage near Penn Rd that affected 465 homes. The timeframe for restoration on the Con Ed website changed yesterday from 11:59 p.m. on Nov 9 to 11:00 p.m. on Nov 4, so we had power even earlier. Keep checking the Con Ed map to see if your timeframe changes. There was a large outage in Greenacres that changed from 6:00 a.m. Nov 4 to pending. I'm not sure what that means but I hope they still get power back today. - BTL

We got our power back at 1:00a.m.! We were part of the outage near Penn Rd that was affecting 465 homes. Ours was one of only a couple of outages whose time for restoration changed yesterday from 11:59 p.m. on Nov 9. It was set for 11:00 p.m. tonight, so the power came back even earlier than that. Keep checking the Con Ed outage map to see if your timeframe changes. Let's hope we are all out of this before Wednesday. - Bonnie

The Mayor's State of Emergency Declaration issued Monday that, as Michael Otten aptly noted (in Comments below the Scarsdale10583,com piece reporting it), by its terms prohibited "all vehicular traffic" and all parking on every single Village street, road, avenue, lane etc stated that the ban would remain in effect until the State of Emergency Declaration was "rescinded." We received a robocall from the Village Government issuing the Mayor's Declaration barring all driving and/or parking on every single Village road - ie the Village Government has a taxpayer-funded resource in the form of robocalling capability that it used to bar people from any driving or parking on any Village road based on a public safety determination. As of 1am Sunday November 4, I have not seen a rescission of that Declaration, by robocall, email, statement to the Inquirer or 10583 or the other Scarsdale news sites, or otherwise. Did I miss the rescission?

Also, re Halloween, the Village Government did engage on it again this year - with a pronouncement apparently in the afternoon on Halloween Day that appeared to state that trick or treating should not be done by kids anywhere at all in Scarsdale. Similar to what was issued last hear, with similar timing With no suggestion of an alternative date. Did I miss a followup communication from the Village Government re a suggestion re an alternative date? Not a big deal in the scheme of things, but officials in other communities have demonstrated ways that community matter can be handled differently.

All, including Mayor Flisser, Village Manager and the rest of the Village Staff, and others, certainly appear to be working hard and trying to do the right thing. We might all also recall that Mayor Flisser is providing her service as a volunteer. But hopefully community input including on Joanne Wallenstein's very helpful community website can be taken into account, and lessons can be learned in terms of Village and Town governance and the CNC process. - Concerned Scarsdale Resident

To Anonymous below--I 100% agree with you that the generator restrictions need to be relaxed. People are more inconvenienced being in the cold, with no electricity and heat, than the temporary noise made by the generators. By the way, big storm coming Wednesday. Here come the flooded basements ... - Anonymous Too

Mayor Flisser is a joke. We absolutely need a democratic process in Scarsdale to elect our officials. We need strong advocates who are able to build relationships with the community, utilities, and etc. and are ACCOUNTABLE to the people of Scarsdale. Our other representatives should be ashamed too, especially those that have no problem coming to our community to raise money (you listening SCHUMER), yet do nothing to advocate on our behalf. - Frustrated

Hi Scarsdale Friends, I'm sorry things are so bad down there. The situation isn't much better up in Chappaqua, where I moved either in terms of power and downed trees but communication is much better. We get daily robo calls from the schools superintendent and from the police on school closings, roads that are now open, etc. that seems not to be happening which is terrible but there things you can do that people are doing up here:
1. Start a Facebook page or have Joanne start a link on the site where people can update power is on or Con Ed trucks are seen. You can also include what roads are passable and which gas stations have shorter lines. Internet trolls, keep opinions away, info only.
2. Flood Con Ed and do it strategically. Coordinate with your neighbors to make sure there are several calls in your area for help. It helps.
3. Chamber of commerce, get involved. People are vowing to shop local only for the holidays due to some really strong outreach earlier. It will help these great stores recover from this terrible event. - Jen Geller in Chappaqua

Posting a second comment because we finally have some news -- per the Con Ed service update website, a number of homes in Greenacres will have power restored Sun 11/4 at 6 AM. Frankly, I'll believe it when I see it, but a number of GA homes have been identified as on this timeline. I don't have any idea how widespread this progress is, or what this means for the rest of Scarsdale, but I wanted to pass along the little info I have. I hope it's accurate and that everyone else is restored quickly.

I also wanted to reiterate the point made here a number of times, that the passing of the crisis shouldn't lead us to forget the Village issues that complicated our recovery. I, for one, would be happy to help circulate a petition to relax generator rules, for starters. If you're interested, please email me at freescarsdale@yahoo.com - Harry

I stopped at Village Hall to offer Real Living Five Corners Real Estate office (which has full power) in any way needed... however my offer was not heard, in fact I was in shock that Village Hall was on bare min generators ... Are we actually so unprepared that the center of the Village which should be a safe haven does not have a seamless generator? With the money that is wasted on the most trivial of items in this Village!!!!

Our office is all about Scarsdale, dozens of people have come in to charge their cell phones, use the internet, even two local residents used our bathroom to blowdry their hair. We are community 110% and please feel free to stop in for a cup of hot coffee or to enjoy some electricity.

My Hats off to all the hard working village employees that are working round the clock to do what they can....like the police officer standing outside our office at Al's gas station keeping order because residents are behaving like five year old's cutting gas lines and acting up. Kudo's to folks like Michael at Stratton pharmacy whom I chatted with as he worked in the dark under a small generator filling prescriptions that were needed.

Sorry, but the Village leadership is not stepping up to the plate..Sure we had some early phone calls about the approaching storm... but now nilch...no update.... I am sure that you and I would be insisting that crews get to work and get the roads open, get shelters open so people dont have to sit in dark & cold houses... but I am sure this will be all forgotten in a few weeks when normalcy returns to Scarsdale.... Stay Safe My Friends! All the best, Jon - Jonathan Lerner

Why can't we hire our own crews. Scarsdale is one of the richest communities in the country. Having worked with Con Ed for years I have NO faith in them. Con Ed does not care about its customers. Con Ec is terrible - Anonymous
