I see your point much better. I do not disagree with you that a community needs balance. - A Young Family

You "young families" misunderstand my post -- you need to have balance in a community. You need a constant inflow of young families of course, but you can't have a situation where the empty nesters see no option but to leave because of the insane and ever-increasing property tax burden of which the school tax is the predominant share. Remarkably, even today, about half of property tax payers in Scarsdale have no children in the schools. If they all flee and are replaced with families with school kids, the school tax will skyrocket ever higher. We must encourage our empty nesters, who have given so much to the community and who have so much more to give, to stick around. And, unless, something is done to stem the school tax, they won't and we all lose. You young families need to understand the need for trade offs in this horrific economic environment. During last Spring's absurd debate about creating some flexibility for slightly larger class sizes if late in the summer some unexpected new students register, one woman with 5 young schoolchildren in the District begged that the size constraint not be lifted -- she moved to Scarsdale for the small classes. My God, what a school budget buster she is -- each of her 5 kids needs her optimal class size so long as the rest of us pay for them. - Something is Rotten in Scardsale

I see no bargain moving to Manhattan...the price of a "decent" apartment and maintenance fees are outrageous....simply a lateral move...that's of course if you can get close to your asking price on your home...I have tried to sell my home, but the "young" couples who came looking want everything for nothing...they want the well maintained, updated classic colonial home in a desirable area of Scarsdale, the top schools and excellent town facilities/services, but want to get it at a "steal"! Better to stay in Scarsdale...or better yet...move South...it's cheaper and nicer weather...and I don't mean moving only to Florida....written by a fairly young empty nester who loves her home but is frustrated over the continous rise in taxes especially school taxes! - Why move to Manhattan....?

Hmmm....I do not read "young family's" post as trying to chase away the older population, but standing up against someone that says young families ruin a community. I think both young and old can live together here nicely. - Hmmm....

Wow, "A young family" nice attitude.
You will do well in Scarsdale.

Yes, I see your logic... young children should be deprived of an excellent public education and a wonderful community. As children move through the school system and eventually graduate, these losses should not be replenished with new children. Empty schools and teacher layoffs are a great thing! Yes, I can see how new families moving to the community is a "death spiral." I mean, I have never heard of a young family volunteering, giving back to their community, school, church or synagogue. Yes, families with school children are the death knell of a community-keep them out! I have never heard of empty nesters wanting to sell their homes for reasons other than taxes--like relieve themselves of the maintenance that comes along with owning a house, or lightening their financial burden so they have the ability to travel and enjoy retirement. Seriously, while I understand the need for a discussion about tax reform, your supporting arguments are just ridiculous. - A Young Family

Why move from Scarsdale when the kids graduate from the schools? Why that's easy -- Escape the insane property taxes. Thus begins the death spiral as families with school kids or soon to be school kids move in to replace the empty nesters, thereby imposing ever greater costs on the school system. Scarsdale needs to keep its empty nesters. They cost the system far less and give back so much with their volunteerism. Taxes must be lowered or held to the cap at worst to stem the exodus. - Something is Rotten in Scardsale
