HoHo Heist

E-mail Print PDF

hohosWe got an email from a reader with a sweet tooth to tip us off to some sticky business at the bakery. She had recently stopped in to Enrico’s Bakery in Hartsdale, and much to her surprise found several shelves of goodies that looked exactly like her favorite treats from Lulu’s Bakery on Garth Road. She noticed twinkies, ring dings, snowballs, hohos and red velvet cupcakes that appeared to be re-creations of Lulu’s recipes.

She asked the woman behind the counter what was up and the woman looked askance. Determined to find out what had happened she drove over to Lulu’s and asked a few questions. Turns out that a baker who worked briefly at Lulu’s may have gone there undercover to learn Lulu’s signature recipes and "take the cake" back to Enrico’s.The baker who was employed at Lulu's for about two months is now back in the kitchen at Enrico's.

Intrigued, we decided to visit the two bakeries to see what we could learn – and sure enough,

Enrico’s did have an entire case of goodies that looked like exact replicas of Lulu’s creations. We bought a few and went onto Lulu’s to do the same.

Below are photos of vanilla, lemon, chocolate and red velvet twinkies from both bakeries. Which taste better you may ask? Lulu’s claims to use higher quality ingredients, and in my opinion you can taste the difference. But go to the two bakeries, try them yourself and let us know which you prefer!

Getting to Garth Rd. is a deterrent to reaching the better bakery. Maybe Lulu's can open a branch in Hartsdale!

Adminstrator, since you purchased and took photos of both, what did they taste like?

The last thing we had at Enrico's was pretty bad. It was a fruit tart with cream in it that had turned. It was terrible, I guess you get what you pay for. We should've went to La Renaissance, they make great tarts. From now on we stick to La Renaissance for their La Renaissance cake and bread, Galloways for pies, and Lulus for cakes.

On another note, our neighbor's daughter used to work at Enrico's one summer and we've heard stories of the owner stalking their employees on a video camera. He sits home and just watches them and if they leave the counter for a minute, he would call them in a fit of rage. Weird.

This is called fair competition. They are allowed to offer the same product as Lulu's. This good for consumers. Good for Enricos for learning that customers want Twinkies and hoho's and 'sare making it. LULU's is so overpriced. Enricos makes the best Kugel, Challah, Cakes and cookies and noodle pudding and are fairly priced.

Enrico's does not have fresh products and is very supermaket quality. Don't waste your time or money. Hit Scarsdale LuLu and La Renaissance.

I don't think Enricos could ever hold a candle to Lulu's. Unless you want lox, prosciutto, chicken salad, babka, gelato and bagels with your Ho-Ho!

They pander more than politicians!

That is truly disgraceful that one bakery owner would think that would be acceptable behavior.
Shame on them for thinking they could in fact get away with that! I would never step foot back in a place that does business that way- god knows what else they are capable of!!

WOW! I am shocked that Enrico's has such low techniques! When I first read this article, I went to both bakeries and compared the two. Lulu's proves to have much richer and tastier ingredients, better service, and a more pleasant atmosphere. I was not impressed by Enrico's pastries or service.

I used to shop at Enricos and enjoyed their challahs and other cookies but I was disturbed when I saw that they were copying certain products that were Lulu's specialty items. The owners of Lulus won't sell pies (except on Thanksgiving ) because they don't want to dilute Galloways business. Jay Muse and Victor Gonzalez are two of the most ethical people I know and fortunately the cakes and cookies they make are so exceptional that even if Enricos tries to copy them, his products can't compare to
Lulus! Immitation is the finest form of flattery! As a proud Lulus customer , I would encourage you not to sample Enrucos . Why waste your money when you can get the original at 40 Garth Rd

While I doubt that Lulu's invented the re-invention of twinkies (although I've seen them in their cases for years and years) I would much prefer to purchase something from a local business that supports it's community -they have been more than generous with their donations for our school events, church functions and a charity fundraiser I once co-chaired. I wish I could say the same about that other bakery in Hartsdale. I was actually yelled at for even asking for a donation to a silent auction.

Lulu's may not have originated the idea of selling twinkies etc in a bakery, but it seems very sleazy to copy the recipes/ideas of another local bakery. Why couldn't Enrico's create their own goodies?

I stopped going to Enrico's years ago. It is not a serious bakery anywhere in the same league as Lulu's--which I patronize even though Enrico's is a block away.

Please, does anyone actual think that Lulu's originated the idea of creating upmarket copies of twinkies , ring dings, etc.? There are dozens, if not hundreds, of bakeries that made these products long before Lulu's. Who knows who Lulu's copied the idea from. IF Enricos copied a scratch recipe for the ingredients, that would be wrong. Employee theft is despicable. However, based on the taste of Enricos products, I am sure that they use standard pre-mixes.

I don't like them either since the woman behind the counter is rude and surly. I don't patronize business with bad customer service

I've never been a fan of Enrico's since they told us the challah we had been buying ever since moving into Scarsdale was "kosher" only to find out that that they were indeed not. I wouldn't put it past the owners of Enricos for such unscrupulous business practices. I this were indeed a "heist," shame on them.
