On June 7th, parents with children in the Scarsdale Middle School received an email from the school warning them against the use of a social media website called ask.fm. The school reported that students have been using the site to “post hurtful and inappropriate material.”
The email from the school read as follows, “ASK.FM is a social networking site where teens can send and receive anonymous questions and comments. Teens can connect to this website through their Facebook and AIM accounts. The website allows for online conversations and does not require that teens reveal their identities. We have learned that some of our students have innocently set up ask.fm accounts hoping to hear positive affirmations from their peers. However, the temptation to use this site for cyber-bullying and harassing other teens is prevalent.”
The school urged parents to find out if their children were using ask.fm and to warn them against possible bullying on the site. They told parents to check their child’s Facebook or Aim pages to see if they were registered for ask.fm. In addition, they recommended that parents monitor their children’s internet activity and keep the computer in a common area so that they can keep an eye on what their kids are doing online.
Here is what we learned about ask.fm:
Ask.fm allows users to create a profile with their picture and information about themselves. Users can access the profiles of other users and can choose to ask a user any question anonymously or to include their user information along with the question. Ask.fm is a multimillion dollar company and has about 760,000 visits a day. Formspring served as a model for ask.fm as well as other Q&A sites. Formspring, which essentially has the same format as ask.fm launched in 2009 and was an instant success.
However, sites like ask.fm and Formspring have been subject to criticism recently. As users can anonymously say whatever they want to other users, these sites have led to cyberbullying and even suicides. In 2010, a West Islip graduate committed suicide after being harassed on Formspring. In 2011, a 15-year-old girl took her life after abuse on Formspring.
The anonymity of these websites gives teenagers the freedom to write anything they wish without fear. These sites are meant to be forums for teenagers to get to know each other better or for celebrities to connect with their fans. However, the unintended consequences of these websites may outweigh the potential benefits as some of the anonymous comments have been hurtful and damaging.

I got bullied over my ask.fm so I deactivated my account but I'm still being talked about on plenty of other people's ask.fm who go to my school.. for instance someone wrote anonymously "Views on Alyssa" on this guys wall and he wrote a huge paragraph calling me a "transevite bitch", "hoe", "dirty begging ugly slut".. I get this a lot. I'm always crying and depressed
Sometimes I just don't want to live

"I'm a Dad. I saw some abuse on my Daughters. Researched it and was horrified to see ask.fm allowed anonymous posts and the role they had in two suicides in Ireland and now Jessica too. I felt compelled to do something in November and I raised awareness with the school because even though it happens out of school the impact happens in school where the emotional well being of the pupil is most disrupted due to the fact the bullies are probably in the playground too. We pulled a campaign together and I managed to get the TV cameras to cover it too.
These suicides are supported by ASK.FM who blame "cruel children". Just google "ciara pugsley" and "Erin Gallagher". The site is integrated in to Facebook so if someone does post horrid cowardly comments all their friends get to see it on FB too! Ive written to Mark Zuckerberg and ask.fm but as usual - no response. They seem to think its ok to supply tools that make children kill each other.
Within a week we managed to change the attitude of an entire school of 1,000 children from them thinking is was funny and okay to "actually some of my friends are not as thick skinned as me and it needs to stop" During my investigation I saw comments like "Im going to get you raped 6 times then stabbed in the head" and "even your friends think you are a c**t and you're going to die". A constant barrage of this abuse is what drives some people that cant handle it to suicide. People ask the question "Why dont you just get off/delete it". Well - there are two simple reasons. 1) the person being abused feels a need or a right to reply to not appear weak. sadly replies "fuel" the bully as they are getting a reaction from the person beoing abused and often their friends. 2) The person being abused wants, in fact NEEDS, to know what is being said about them otherwise they worry that people would be laughing at them as they may know something they dont. Sadly these reasons keep people engaged with the very thing thats hurting them. TV footage is here:
Lunchtime slot: http://www.facebook.com/video/..._processed
Evening slot footage. Great awareness in a 4 min 20 sec slot. We have also sent a letter and petition to ask.fm and mark zuckerberg from Facebook is getting one too as they allow ask.fm inside Facebook. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v...WNOI&gl=GB
If youre a parent or school and would like to know more please feel free to inbox me. The more we share the more we can educate and raise awareness. Facebook is in most kids pockets now and do YOU know whats being said to YOUR child? Ask.fm seem totally uninterested that kids are killing themselves, as do facebook with their tools but feel free to hound ask.fm. here is their CEOs address:
Mark Terebin
Ask.FM

Im not suggesting the site should close down but the ability to POST ANONYMOUSLY allows evil people to be evil from the comfort of their sofa. its this bit that needs removing."
PS> Search for Mark Zuckerberg too and inbox him from facebook. Let him know hes allowing a company to operate within his framework but that company is actually tarnishing his brand and reputation by supporting what is, in my opinion, murder.

It would seem that anyone can open an account and pretend to be whoever they like, posting messages in the name of the innocent person named.
This has been reported to the police, CEOPS and Ask.fm themselves. However, Ask have still not replied to my message about this. Funny that!!!

I will definately NOT make an account. Why throw myself into a trap? I have enough in life and cyber bullying is something I will never be able to handle.
Thank you for shedding light on this topic. I'd rather be safe than just follow some silly trend.

shut it down. talk with you kid and remind them that you do not allow them to have the account and if the account is set up again, they will lose the computer or what ever you think works for you and your family.
it isn't ok for people to bully other people or send what my daughter got which was sexually explicit stuff but once it happened, you don't have to keep the account open.
SOmetimes I think kids use these sites as a thrill. it's what teenagers do but it needs to be channeled.
