Parking To Get Even Scarcer in Scarsdale Village

E-mail Print PDF

cranebridge2Construction is due to begin on the Bronx River Parkway in Scarsdale on a new bridge at Crane Road to replace the 1924 bridge that is now, according to Westchester County, in “poor condition.” The entire project will take almost three years, (34 months) and will start by on June 1, 2012.

In order to accommodate the construction equipment, Scarsdale granted Westchester County an easement to use approximately 17 parking spaces, or half of the Merchant’s Lot next to the Scarsdale Train Station for the entire length of the project. The County paid the Vilage $267,000 for the use of the space.

Approximately 10 months from now, in March 2013, the north and southbound Crane Road exits from the Bronx River Parkway to Scarsdale Village will close for two years. In order to get to the Village from the Parkway, drivers will need to exit at Harney Road and drive up Scarsdale Avenue.

This means that for the next three years, it will be even more difficult to access Scarsdale Village and park once you get there. Merchants who parked in that lot will need to enter into a lottery for the remaining available spaces. Those who are not given a space there can apply for a spot on Scarsdale Avenue or in the Freightway Garage on the village website.

It is puzzling why the Village would allow the County to take over half of one of the much-needed parking lots in the Village at a time when the bridge work will make it difficult to get to the Village. Though the Village needed the funds they were paid for the easement, the benefit does not go directly to the retailers who will bear the brunt of the inconvenience. Shoppers and merchants, who are already suffering from the lengthy construction project on the Popham Road Bridge, will now have to withstand three more years of disruption.

Why is this being done now when we already have too big a disruption? Once again politicians making very bad decisions.

I am at a loss why it takes so long for these projects. Why not get the Army Corp of Engineers involved, they put up bridges the size of Popham Road in a week or so in other countries, not the too many years it takes to do it in Scarsdale. Lucky I am closer to New Rochelle and Mamaroneck.

What most Residents do not realize is it costs the Merchants (parking in the Merchant Lot) twice as much as they are paying to park in Christie Place.
Not only do we pay for a permit, but we pay the meter and it is only by the hour.
If you happen to make a mistake and put the wrong time or number tickets are $20.00.

I concur with Scarsdale Friend: the prohibited left turn from eastbound Popham onto East Parkway should be limited to daytime and weekday rush hours. Certainly between 7:30 pm - 7:30 am that turn should be permitted -- as well as on weekends. Correcting this oversight would alleviate driver f frustration over an unnecessary inconvenience due to bureaucratic benign neglect. Scarsdale's government ought to be able to better than benign neglect as it "manages" this chaos.

The Popham Road bridge construction has been a nightmare for traffic and local residents (i.e. the noise of construction late at night.) Many of the lanes don't make sense to a lot of people (left lane on E. Parkway is for going straight onto Scarsdale Avenue). Frankly, I am surprised there haven't been more accidents. The businesses have suffered greatly in the village. I understand why the village says no Left on E. Parkway (coming from Garth Road) during the day because of traffic. But why not be able to do it late at night? If I am coming back from a late dinner or event and there is no one on the road, having to go to Chase Road for the Left is annoying.

I do not know how the businesses in downtown are staying open with all of this. I think it is a testament to how wonderful the people are within our community and their continued effort to support the businesses locally.
