Before and After

E-mail Print PDF

saxonwoodshouseDespite economic woes, increased flooding and Village regulations, Scarsdale homes continue to get bigger and bigger. Here are two before and after photos of homes that have grown on their lots. Do you have new construction sprouting on your street? Take a photo and share it with our readers:

140 Saxon Woods Road: A group of residents argued that the original home on the site had historic importance as it was one of the last relics of a community of freed slaves who moved to Scarsdale in the mid 19th century. However, the Committee on Historic Preservation did not find it historically significant and the demolition of the original home was allowed to go through. Take a look at the size of the house (above) that is now going up on this .19 acre lot, wedged between two existing homes.

47 Greenacres Avenue: Some were surprised when this beautiful Greenacres home with a wide front porch sold for a very reduced price this past summer. An addition to this 3,100 square foot house on almost 1/3 of an acre was approved in September, 2011 and now it looks as if it is almost double the original size.

I walk by the supposed MacMansion at 47 Greenacres every day. The new owners have maintained the original facade, and have essentially doubled the size of the house with the addition on the back of the house. However, the detail put into the addition looks appropriate for the neighborhood and the house fits the lot very nicely. If the house sold at a reduced price, it probably needed a lot of work (as so many of the house do around here since people never seem to fix up anything) so why not make the best of a great location in a great community? It also makes all or our properties look better. Now if we can just get that re-val done and equalize the taxes for this community!

These are sad times for our community. It just keeps metastasizing. It's happening in my neighborhood too. Small lots with big new houses built right to the allowable limits. Many trees are being cut down so these new houses can be shown off. Backyards lit up without screening. There's really no character to many of these new houses. Sadly, what can we do? Nothing but take the pain of progress? The horror, the horror,........

couldn't agree more with the above ! Mac Mansions , most with anachronistically tiny window panes are going up near me as well. There seems to be an ongoing competition : who can build the ugliest house !!

Typical of this next generation...tear down or destroy what was the essence of Scarsdale and build outward or outdo the surrounding neighbors even if it means infringing on the original beauty of the neighborhood...but the blame is with the town that grants such permits for such atrocities...but what the heck...it's more tax dollars for Scarsdale!! Oh, by the way, I have seen it in my neighborhood all too frequently and I'm tired of always seeing construction vehicles parked all over the place with outhouses to boot!!!smilies/sad.gif
