Burglars Target Greenburgh Homes

E-mail Print PDF

brokenwindowGreenburgh is being hit with a rash of burglaries. Greenburgh Police Detective Peter Dandreano reports that between October 3rd and November 30th there were 20 in all, with seven in Edgemont and the south end, a few in Hartsdale and ten in the northern section of Greenburgh.

The most recent burglary occurred on the night of November 30th on Greenville Road in Edgemont and additional homes were hit on Mendham Avenue, Sheridan Road, Cherrywood Road, Evandale Road, Pheasant Run and High Point Lane. In most cases the burglars gained entry by breaking a rear sliding glass door. They ransacked bedrooms and took mostly jewelry and cash.

In the Parkway Homes section of Greenburgh, which is east of the Bronx River Parkway and north of Route 287, burglaries have occurred on Winnetou Road, Tomahawk Road, Leather Stocking Lane and Indian Trail. (see the map at right.) In most cases the burglars forced entry through a rear or side window or door but others got in through unlocked windows and doors. The burglars tossed bedrooms and took video games, a laptop computer, watches, jewelry and cash.roberrymap

The burglaries sound very similar in nature to the incidents in Scarsdale and could be the work of the same suspects. Police advise residents to keep doors and windows locked and alarms activated. They are also cautioning residents to be vigilant of their surroundings while walking to and from their cars, and when walking through the neighborhood.

Greenburgh Police ask residents to report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood. If you notice a suspicious vehicle, person, or incident call 914-682-5300 immediately. Remember to get a good description of the person/persons and any vehicles involved.

If anyone has any information on these burglaries, please call the Greenburgh Police Detective Division at 914-682-5348.

Can we put cameras along major thru roads? Can neighborhood groups put up cameras and have volunteers man them remotely via Internet like some nanny cams or othe closed circuit tv web cams out in market place?

After the Nov 30th Greenville robbery, the detectives explained that the work resembles that of a large Colombian Organized Crime gang that use to deal in drugs but have now focused on burglary. These gangs have spread across the east coast and no house is safe. They are now experts in burglary and are watching our houses, doing surveillance. It is quite scary to know that they are watching for days before knowing when we are not at home. They will call your house to check if you are home. He did explain that if you are at home- they will run away - they usually don't carry weapons and don't want to hurt anyone because they know that can lead to a larger sentence if caught. They have explained that the FBI can't help as much because there is no immediate threat with weapons but did request to talk to our local representatives to allow easier search warrants to track suspicious cars with gps tags.

He also explained that they drive normal nice cars and look like they belong in the neighborhood. Doing more patrols is the beginning but there are many wooded areas for these people to hide in- they have google maps as well - we need to secure our houses, keep our jewelry in the bank. He even said that they have evaded police several times inside the neighborhood.

The officer went on to explain that the average alarm systems is slow - the first thing the alarm company does is to call the house - it takes an average of 8 minutes for officers to show up- more than enough time for the thieves to get out of there. I will be installing video cameras, will look into shatterproof films for windows, remember to keep alarm system on when I'm inside the house. Once these people have broken in and are gone- the police don't have much to go on - no fingerprints, no camera footage, no real clues except time, style, methods.

We should try to create as much media attention and awareness around this issue - this is the worst type of problem to have for our neighborhoods - our houses are targets. Keep everyone aware and vigilant. These guys won't stop.

I agree 100% ! I have only received 2 tickets in 20 years and they have both been within the Greenburgh jurisdiction, within the last 2 years.. And they were both for silly violations,, not for speeding or failing to stop for a red light or sign. Start really protect our residents, please.

Yes! I totally agree with "Seriously". The robberies seem to occur during the early evening hours, in many cases when people are out to dinner. Stepping up patrols during those hours might be beneficial.

Can the reporter tell us what time of day these burglaries took place? Were they all at night? The Edgemont burglaries all took place on the "Greenville" side, and in clusters. Do we know why? Do they use Fort Hill Rd as a quick escape route? Do the robbers keep targeting the same neighborhoods? If so, than why can't the police catch these guys? A lot of these properties are close to each other. Its crazy that no one notices people carrying things out the back of someones home.
Should we insist that Greenburgh get cameras installed on the lamp posts, like they have in NYC and like Metro North has on the platforms?

4 houses within a 1 block radius from my house have been burglarized . Maybe they should set up a couple of surveillence cameras within 'popular' neighborhoods and wait until the next one. Most plates can be eliminated as residents and suspicious ones checked out. Sounds like a longshot but it seems to work in the city pretty often and they may get lucky - these criminals seem to turn up in my area pretty regularly!!.

I think most of us in Scarsdale would feel more secure if our police squad spent more time patrolling our neighborhood and less time giving out parking tickets, setting up roadblocks for checking inspection stickers, and engaging in similar revenue-raising activities.

Don't other residents agree?
