No Trick, No Treat in Scarsdale

E-mail Print PDF

haolloweensageterraceAt a briefing with the League of Women Voters on Monday morning October 31, Village Manager Al Gatta revealed that 2,800 village homes are without power --- a greater number of homes than were dark in March, 2010 --and the largest number of homes without power in his tenure as Village Manager.

Village teams have been hard at work picking up branches and clearing roads, but officials at Scarsdale Village Hall can do little to get service from Con Ed crews. As of Monday at noon, almost 48 hours after the onset of the storm, no repair crews are in the Village.

In other Village news, there will be no trick or treating tonight. As there are still live wires on the ground, it is not recommended that children trick or treat tonight. The Village has not set a new date to celebrate Halloween. In an email from Mayor Flisser, she recommends that you “keep children safe by rescheduling this evening’s activities.” She cautions against downed wires, heavy equipment and icy roads.

When will power be restored? Gatta says that Con Edison has promised to have power back in all homes by midnight on Wednesday November 2nd, but looked skeptical when making this statement. When pressed, Gatta said that he wouldn’t be surprised if it took until Friday for repairs on some streets.

Where can you go to get warm? Some are hanging out at the library where there is internet service and others are staying with friends or at local hotels. Rose at Five Corners Properties at 300 Heathcote Road in the old Scarsdale Ambulance Corps Building is inviting anyone from the community to come in and use their computers, pick up a hot cup of coffee/tea, or charge their cell phone.

I can't agree with Had Enough. The Village made a poor choice to make the Halloween announcement at the 11th hour. It certainly sounded like a CYA move to me. If the condition of the town was considered to be so severe, a detailed announcement should have been made on Sunday with a rescheduled date for trick or treating. Instead the Village left parents with a lot of confusion and questions.

As so many others have already noted, the problem isn't that the Village asked parents to keep their kids inside on October 31, but that it didn't specify a new date for trick-or-treating.

The Village didn't postpone Halloween - it stole it. Bah Humbug!

Relax everyone! Remember, these weather conditions are a first, so there was no protocol in place from the town.. Can you imagine if a child was hurt, or worse? The same people complaining would be the same ones wondering why the town didn't issue a statement. And... as disappointing as it was, don't you think it's a good time to teach your children that sometimes even the best-laid plans have to change, and to make the best of it? Take it as an opportunity to improvise ( have neighbors over, make up Halloween games, etc), not teach your children to whine about their disappointment.

Wake up folks, I realize the kiddies may be upset but thats a whole lot better than injured or worse. The Village did the prudent thing and presented parents with the facts about the dangers of kids on roads with downed trees and potentially live wires. I counted at least a half dozen large tree limbs hanging by a few small branches in my neighborhood that will come down one way or another. Look around for yourselves so you and your kids know where to steer clear of! Call the Village announcement "self-serving" if you want, I call it a sound decision.

Marauding children cleaned me out of 16 bags of candy! What a ridiculous statement from the village. Completely agree with "Resident" below that this was an attorney-driven communication. We deserve better than this from our village manager and mayor! If the village was serious about keeping people home, they should have come up with a clear alternative plan, not this nebulous statement that left everything up to individual interpretation (but perhaps let the village off the hook if anyone were to be hurt).

Without giving a date to reschedule the kids' favorite holiday of the year, the Village has ensured that many, many families will ignore their recommendation and trick or treat anyway. It may have been well intentioned, but poorly carried out from the lack of an alternative date or activity to the last-minute announcement (the decision was made at 11am -why did we hear at 2:58 pm?). From the number of people our in Edgewood tonight, I'd say most people ignored the recommendation.

Uh, it's recommended that we re-schedule? How am I, as one parent, supposed to re-schedule trick or treating for the entire Village? So if I want to re-schedule it for Wednesday, I can just show up at random doorfronts and expect them to hand out candy? Please! Isn't this why we elect officials -- to make these decisions! You can't make a statement like that and expect everybody in the Village to then pick their own day. I suspect the Village Attorney actually made the recommendation -- a disingenuous one at that designed only to protect themselves in case they get sued. smilies/tongue.gif Anybody disagree? Anybody think the mayor's statement that we should just go off and re-schedule on our own is a legitimate one?

Are you sure? It says that it is recommended. Meaning we can still go, but, shouldn't? I understand... But, I think most people will still go. If you found a better way to display the information above, a lot less people would go! smilies/wink.gif
