Lights Won’t Go Back On in Scarsdale Until Midnight on Wednesday

E-mail Print PDF
Octstorm2Here's the Sunday afternoon storm update: As of Sunday afternoon at 3 pm, somewhere between 800-1,000 Scarsdale residents have been without power for almost 24 hours. Homes in Greenacres, Fox Meadow, Heathcote and Quaker Ridge are affected and as another cold night is approaching, everyone is asking when power will be restored. Scarsdale Mayor Miriam Flisser has just corroborated what the Con Edison website shows – Con Edison is not promising to restore power to Scarsdale until midnight on Wednesday, November 2nd!

Why? According to Mayor Miriam Flisser who had a 2 pm conference call with

Dan Lyons, public OctStorm1affairs manager of Con Ed, Con Ed is still assessing the damage in our area. In Westchester County about 70,000 customers are without power and Con Edison will establish public safety first and then prioritize repairs. Circuits with the largest damage areas will be restored first with individual outages assigned secondary priority.

Scarsdale, have been assigned local emergency liaison personnel to coordinate the restoration-- and crews have been called in from Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland to assist.

That doesn’t explain why some customers in Edgemont already have their power back on or why Scarsdale does not have a single crew at work now. In an email from Greenburgh Police Chief Jospeh Decarlo at 4 pm on Sunday, he says, "Con Edison has restored power to several areas and will continue to work through the night." Similar to the March, 2010 storm, while power was restored in Greenburgh, Scarsdale waited for crews to begin repairing power lines.

No information is available yet about the status of the schools and whether or not they will be open tomorrow. We will continue to post any updates we receive.

People, contrary to local thought, Scarsdale is NOT the epicenter of the known universe!
There are places where the schools have no power and even some hospital grids are "iffy".

Get off your high horses and check into the Ritz!

It is sad how the beauty of Scarsdale is being ripped from the earth. I have lost tall tress and lush bushes between the two big blackouts of March 2010 and October 2011. This is my second time out of electricty. Throw in all portable generators that people are utilizing and the cold home, it's tough getting a good night sleep. This is our world evolving/devovling. I don't think I signed up for this environment.

Gorham Ct on the north end of Green Acres is once again half out of power, while Brewster Road seems fine. No trees or power lines visibly down, but we are without power.

After this massive restoration effort is over, I'd really like to see Con Ed investigate why we keep losing power despite not having any fallen trees or power lines.

Completely unacceptable response form Con Ed. They are a complete and utter joke. Once again Scarsdale gets the short end of the stick from them. Maybe this time our county and state gov't officials can step in and get involved, instead of just the mayor.
Maybe Greenburgh get preference because of the town supervisor making noise?

Trees planted where their branches reach over power lines will continue to cause these problems. It is a consequence of trees planted to give our streets a beautiful street scape, and they do, but, like anything, it can come with a cost. This problem seems to be happening almost annually. While the past is the past...in the future it would make sense to limit trees near power lines to ones that are either shorter (maybe red buds or dogwoods or cherrys or something like that...I am not an arborist) or hard woods like oaks that are tougher, or to set them back where they can not cause a problem. It only takes one to shut off power to the entire street.

In my opinion, Con Ed is not going to put power lines underground in our lifetimes. The cost of maintenance is too high and Scarsdale's low density does not make it cost effective.

We are so lucky to have power at our place of business, 300 Heathcote Road in Scarsdale, the old Scarsdale Ambulance Corp building. If anyone needs to check their email, or use the internet, or even wants a hot cup of coffee/tea, they are more than welcome to come in. You can even charge your phones! We also have wireless if you have a laptop.

I'd feel better about the 11 PM Wednesday estimated time of restoration if we saw ConEd trucks around town and it looked as though they were busy clearing Scarsdale's issues, but I haven't seen any. What will it take to get their attention?

My whole street in Edgewood is out. Why were we left out of the article?

Are there any homes without power in Edgewood?
