Why Does Con Edison Treat Westchester Residents Like Second Class Citizens?

E-mail Print PDF

feinerHere is a letter written by Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner about Con Edison repair work in Westchester: To the Editor: Hurricane Irene left a good portion of Greenburgh and Westchester out of power. Con Ed issued a press release after the storm that indicated that most of their NYC customers would have their power restored by Tuesday night and Westchester customers would get their power restored two days later--by late Thursday night.

I realize that Con Ed cannot restore everyones power immediately after a storm but question why Westchester ratepayers are treated like second class citizens. After every storm Westchester customers wait much longer to have power restored than our NYC neighbors. We pay the same rates as NYC customers pay but don't get treated equally. Why should NYC customers always get their power restored first--a few days before Westchester customers?

My home phone is ringing off the hook with calls from senior citizens and disabled residents who experience real hardships whenever there are power outages. I think it would be fairer if Con Ed treated all of their customers the same----and if they would spread their crews around their service area until power is restored to all. Another option: they should rotate the order of service restorations--during one outage NYC should get service restored first and Westchester second. The second outage Westchester gets power restored first and NYC gets it second.
PAUL FEINER
Greenburgh Town Supervisor

Density of population, people. It'd be undemocratic to restore power to fewer people (westchester) first.

when it came to the fortress bible church, feiner treated that group of people as non-entities who he could bully into giving up their rights to build a house of worship and school with doctored traffic studies and endless red tape.

feiner is not interested in governing - he is a perpetual gadfly whose lack of attention has cost the town millions. most recently feiner blurted out at a town board meeting " he can do anything he wants" even overlook the town's zoning code when i came to an abandoned gasoline station that wanted to re-open even though it had been closed for more than 6 months and thus had lost its non confoming use.

mit rommney is right about one thing - the career politicians have gotten us into the economic mess we are in and thats what feiner is - a career politician who is long past his sale date.

I've lived in Greenburgh for ~6yrs and I'm tired of losing power anytime we have a storm.

In the last 2 years we've lost power on several occasions for multiple days while friends in Yonkers and NYC have either not lost power or alternatively regained power within 24hours.
Remember March 2010...we had no power for almost an entire week. I think we were the last in Westchester to get power back.

Greenburgh officials (who collect our insanely high property taxes) need to meet with Con Ed to determine what can be done to make the situation better. Cutting down trees with wires going through them seems to make sense.

My pregnant wife (8 months), my 5 yr old daughter and I spent last night in my in-laws small apartment in Yonkers (6 miles south of my house and they never lost power).

Current Status: Con Ed initially said Thursday for restore date; now they are claiming it is undetermined....

Westchester isn't treated second class . It has an overhead system that takes longer to repair and the damage is widespread . The NYC system is underground so there's much less that can happen to it. Plus you have to deal with tree trimming and removal. Ignorance is bliss in politics . This letter written is proof .

Maybe if Greenburgh (Tree City USA) and Westchester would allow Con Ed to trim trees which threaten electricical service we would'nt have this problem. Just a common sense thought.

Completely agree - why are Westchester residents treated like second-class citizens by Con Ed, and what are our politicians and elected officials doing to change that? Will definitely influence my vote in the future.

Totally agree with Mr Feiner. It is sad that we need to wait 4 days and nyc waits 2. Yet kids and parents here deal with 2 extra days of darkness. Expect alot of phone calls con ed. Then again they do have the word "con" in their name so go figure.
