Andrew Zayac Found Guilty in Murder Trial

E-mail Print PDF

maryjaneA federal jury in Bridgeport, CT found SHS graduate Andrew Zayac guilty of murder, kidnapping, possession and a host of other charges in Bridgeport, CT on Friday, July 22nd. Evidence presented at the trial showed that in early 2009, Zayac negotiated the purchase of 68 pounds of marijuana from drug dealer Edward Rivera and arranged to meet Rivera on February 8, 2009, to complete the transaction. Prosecutors contend that Zayac kidnapped Rivera from the Bronx for the purpose of robbing him of the marijuana which was valued at $150,000.  During the course of the kidnapping and robbery, Rivera was shot twice and died as a result of the gunshot wounds. Zayac and his associate, Heriberto Gonzalez, 31, also of the Bronx, then dumped Rivera’s body in Danbury, Connecticut, drove back to the Bronx and burned Zayac’s car. The trial began on July 14 and the jury returned the verdict on July 22nd.

U.S. District Attorney for the District of Connecticut, David B. Fein credited the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Danbury Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service for excellent work in providing “justice for the victim’s family and loved ones.”

Sentencing is scheduled for October 7, 2011, however Zayac faces a mandatory life sentence for the murder conviction. In a separate trial, Gonzalez was found guilty of one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, three counts of destruction/concealment of evidence, and one count of conspiracy to destroy/conceal evidence. He awaits sentencing.

Andrew Zayac was a star soccer player at Scarsdale High School, and graduated from SHS in 1998. In 2000, Westchester County police arrested him and two others for allegedly possessing more than 1,000 ecstasy pills. Zayac is the son of Linda Zayac, a treasured member of the staff of the Greenacres School, and Bob Zayac, who taught physical education and coached soccer at Scarsdale High School for 35 years, and now runs the Soccer Camp for the Village of Scarsdale.

The family is in my prayers. Bob Zayac was my brother's Soccer Coach and she played soccer with Andy. This will be a sad holiday season for this family.

Andrew did not get screwed by anyone but himself! He was the one who owned the car! He was the one who told 3 different stories to the cops! He was the only one with a cell phone that only talked to the victim! He was also the one who had two chances to leave when he had the car and the gun when Gonzalez was busy dumping the body and buying gasoline! He was also the one who was in possession of the 68 lbs of marajuana!! Andrew Zayac and Heriberto Gonzalez both made choices that they will have to live with for the rest of their lives! In the end they turned against each other. Noone is to blame but themselves! Its tragedy for both their families and the families of the victim! All of them were living a dangerous lifestyle and must have been aware of the consequences!!

I knew Andrew growing up. the truth will set us all free, and I can tell you from day 1 this kid was a bad seed of the worst kind. as a tiny little freshman, he was stealing money from seniors' gym lockers ... and his father was the gym teacher! ... he had no fear and no respect. a real sociopath.
His family are Saints.

Umm, my heart breaks for the family of Eddie....you know the person Andrew murdered in cold blood. I feel terrible for Andrews parents, of course...no parents deserve to be put threw something so horrible. But lets honestly think about parents who found their sons lifeless body thrown in a pond somewhere in Connecticut.

Andrew got screwed, plain and simple. No concrete evidence that he shot anyone. How can he be guilty and his co defendant not?

Why isn’t this verdict being questioned like the Casey Anthony verdict? Have the county, state and federal prosecutors brainwashed the public into thinking that the jury system works as long as the verdict is guilty?

Andrew was a good kid that fell into a bad crowd. My hopes and prayers go out to his family. He did not deserve this and from the Andy I knew, I'm shocked he could have done this.

It may be difficult to believe he could commit such an awful crime, but shame on him for bringing 68 lbs of marijuana into his parents home. It could have been disasterous iif the people who were out the marijuana and the money came looking for it.. Sounds like a troubled individual to me.

I was at the trial and he was convicted of felony murder. That does not mean he planned the murder or pulled the trigger. The evidence actually shows otherwise. BUT, since he was commiting a felony (purchasing marijuana) and it resulted in murder, that is why he was convicted. They didn't have evidence to prove he knew about the shooting beforehand or that he was the person that shot the victim. The prosecutors claim that he and Gonzalez carried the body yet no DNA of Zayac's was found on the victim's shoes, jacket.

It is terrible what Andrew did and yes, it was all related to drugs, but I feel a picture of Andrew makes more sense than a picture of a marijuana leaf in the caption. Marijuana is being associated with the word murder do to the caption which only promotes the idea that it was the use of marijuana which can cause terrible things, while it is the shady business behind it which is dangerous.
