More Scarsdale homes may be destined for the wrecking ball. Among the most prominent, is the house at 1 Duck Pond Road. Prospective buyers who were interested in tearing down the house spent considerable time and resources arguing that the home did not meet any of the criteria for preservation and the deadlocked Committee for Historic Preservation failed to vote to protect the home . Empty for several years, the home has become a white elephant, with the new buyers contending that renovating the house would be far too costly.

This past week, the house, which sits on 3.73 acres was sold for $4,750,000 and presumably it will soon be demolished to clear the way for a new house on the Duck Pond. Drive by and take a last look.

The Committee for Historic Preservation will meet on Tuesday night April 26, to consider the fate of five additional homes.

On the hit list are the following:

21 Morris Lane

60 Sheldrake Road: a 1950’s ranch that backs onto Fenway Golf Course

60 Sheldrake Road

39 Oxford Road

11 Pinecrest Road: A four bedroom, three bath, 2131 square foot home in Sherbrooke Park

11 Pinecrest Road

49 Wildwood Road (no details available)

Is there really anything offensive about these "MacMansions"? - most of them are quite beautiful and clearly well constructed with top quality materials. Yes, they are large - so what? I wouldn't want their ConEd bills - that's for sure! If that is what people chose to do with their money who is any one of us to pass judgement on their taste? Your comments sound like sour grapes to me -. I personally think the house at Duck Pond is ugly, sometimes old houses are just ugly (and certainly impractical). Some people might think your house is an eyesore. We won't make you tear it down. People have the right to do what they want with their own property and do not have to appease other people's sense of aesthetics. The BAR are not the arbiters of taste inthis town - their power is probably and should be limited to size of house based on the size of the property and other extremes such as color. This is America.

I am having second thoughts about the Village website and its accuracy. It has the Duck Pond house as having its demolition "denied" but the vote is written as 2-2-1....which would indicate it would be approved not denied since there was not a majority to deny.

I asked a friend who follows these things about the 5 homes above and looks like the website may be mistaken and that the properties have to come back before the ctte at a later date...so given all the confusion...looks like a 'stay tuned'.

The decisions of the Ctte. on Historic Preservation are available on the Village website...under the Historic Preservation Committee.. scroll down the page. All properties were approved for demolition.

The decision to allow the demolition of One Duck Pond shows that the Committee on Historic Preservation is toothless. This Committee virtually always votes to allow demolition, notwithstanding its haughty rhetoric. One Duck Pond was surely an iconic house that will undoubtedly be replaced by a noveau riche monstrosity. Look at, for instance, the hideous debacle going on behind the Middle School. Less earth was moved to construct the Maginot Line. The people in this town talk a good game about preservation of neighborhood character, but when push comes to shove, they fold. Money talks. Sad.

Why don't we tear down all the older houses with character and replace them with (Mc)mansions that are characterless all in the name of the holy buck, which is disintegrating before our eyes. Oh, I forgot, that's already happening. How ironic: Many want brand new, turnkey homes that add no texture to our town. Our town is losing its style but that seems to be irrelevant as the newbies and mover ups all try to impress each other with a bigger and, mostly uglier homes. SAD.
Quel horror!
